Movies

If you have created a proper CSV file (as described at http://netwalkapps.com/faq/what-format-must-my-csv-file-be), you need to go to our conversion page (http://www.netwalkapps.com/python/convert2movies.html), choose CSV file and upload your CSV file.

The conversion page will generate a ZIP file on-the-fly which you can use to import into Movies (http://www.netwalkapps.com/tutorial/backup-restore-iphone) or Movies HD (http://www.netwalkapps.com/tutorial/backup-restore-ipad).

The CSV file you want to convert into a Movies ZIP file must meet some requirements in order to be converted properly:

  • The CSV file must be encoded in UTF-8. It must not be encoded in Unicode. The make sure it's in the correct format, open Notepad (or TextWrangler) and save the file with UTF-8 encoding
  • The delimiter in the CSV file must be a comma
  • The first line of the CSV file must contain the names of the fields
  • The CSV file must contain at least a field Title
  • Other supported fields:
    • "Genre"
    • "Medium"
    • "Release Date" or "Year"
    • "Running Time" or "Length"
    • "Link" or "URL"
    • "Director"
    • "UPC"
    • "Cast"
    • "Plot"
    • "Country"
    • "MPAA"
    • "Rating"

Converting the source XML on your computer has some requirements:

  1. You need to have a Windows machine
  2. You need to download msxsl.exe from Microsoft and save it to a folder (e.g. C:\Temp)
  3. You need to download the XSLT converter for your application and save it in the same directory as msxsl.exe:
  4. Now open a command prompt, go to the folder where you downloaded the msxsl.exe and type msxsl.exe my-source-xml.xml dvdprofiler.xslt -o export.xml whereby you replace my-source-xml.xml with the filename of the soucre XML and dvdprofiler.xslt with the XSLT file you just downloaded.
  5. The newly created export.xml is the file you need. Continue the import process as described here.
  1. In Delicious Library, choose to export your library to 1.5. This will generate an XML which you will use as source for the conversion.
  2. Convert this XML using our online converter (http://www.netwalkapps.com/python/convert2movies.html). This will generate a new XML, which should be used for importing your collection in Movies
  3. Make a new folder somewhere, copy the newly created XML file into this folder, as well as all the cover art JPGs from Delicious Library
  4. Select all files in your newly created folder (i.e. the 1 XML file as well as all covers), right-click and select "Compress items". This will generate a new ZIP file
  5. Upload this new ZIP file to Movies or Movies HD using the normal restore procedure:
    Movies: http://www.netwalkapps.com/content/backup-restore
    Movies HD: http://www.netwalkapps.com/content/backup-and-restore
  1. Backup your library from the iPhone (as described here)
  2. Restore your library onto the iPad (as described here)

You should not alter the ZIP file you downloaded during backup. If the Mac extracts the ZIP file automatically after download, just recreate it by selecting all files in the downloaded folder, right click, and choose [Compress xxx files]

When you're in shelf-view or list-view (i.e. watching your movie list) and shake the iPhone or iPod Touch, it will randomly select a movie!

This is the advanced tutorial

  1. DVDP: Flag all profiles in Owned and Ordered
  2. DVDP: Export flagged profiles to one XML file and only select Overview, Cast (all credits) and Crew (max. 3 credits)
  3. Notepad++: Open exported file, go to menu "Format" and choose "Convert to UTF-8 without BOM"
  4. Notepad++: In the first line replace "windows-1252" with "utf-8" and save the file
Upload file to Netwalk's conversion page and save the result to a new file
Repeat steps 1. to 5. with your Wish List items (in DVDP remember to unflag all profiles first)
  5. Notepad++: Open the Wish List file and replace all (Ctrl+H) </Year><Length> with </Year><Status>1</Status><Length>
  6. Notepad++: Copy (Ctrl+C) everything between <XMM_Movie_Database> and </XMM_Movie_Database>
  7. Notepad++: Open the Owned & Ordered file, paste the clipboard (Ctrl+V) right after <XMM_Movie_Database> and save it as export.xml
  8. XnView: Go to "Tools" and choose "Batch processing..."
  9. Explorer: Open DVD Profiler's image folder (default path is "My Documents\DVD Profiler\Databases\\Images"), open the search panel (Ctrl+F) and search for *f.* (be sure Options --> Advanced --> Subfolders is unchecked)
Explorer: Mark all files (Ctrl+A) and add them via drag and drop into XnView's "Input" field
  10. XnView: Choose an export path, JPG as format and in format options a quality between 60 and 80
  11. XnView: Go to tab "Tranformations", expand "Image", choose "Resize", hit "Add <", enter 320 as width, only check "Keep ratio" and finally hit "Go"
  12. 7-Zip: Pack the export.xml and the converted covers as one ZIP archive named export.zip
  13. Upload this new ZIP file to Movies or Movies HD using the normal restore procedure:
  1. Export your DVDPedia library, which will create a <filename>.DVDPedia file
  2. Rename the extension of this file to .ZIP and extract the contents. It will extract 1 XML file and a bunch of cover art JPGs.
  3. Convert the info.xml (which you just extracted) using our online converter (http://www.netwalkapps.com/python/convert2movies.html). This will generate a new XML, which should be used for importing your collection in Movies
  4. Make a new folder somewhere, copy the newly created XML file into this folder, as well as all the JPGs from the DVDPedia ZIP file (they reside in a Covers folder)
  5. Select all files in your newly created folder (i.e. the 1 XML file as well as all covers), right-click and select "Compress <xxx> items". This will generate a new ZIP file
  6. Upload this new ZIP file to Movies or Movies HD using the normal restore procedure:

When "Realtime cover" is enabled, the cover images are loaded realtime. This will result in a slower collection browsing, but the covers will be visualized immediately. When it is disabled, browsing your collection will be fast, but the cover art will only be visible after a few milliseconds (depending on iPhone version, ...).

Users of Movies 1.x might had issues with the CoverFlow view after upgrading to Movies 2.0. This option regenerates all coverflow-caches. As this is a time-consuming and CPU-heavy process, you should only execute this process when CoverFlow is showing wrong/bad images.

Movies allows to take a backup of your collection through the FTP process. This is non-trivial and requires a supported FTP client (FileZilla on Windows, Cyberduck or Transmit on OSX). We have a walkthrough available online: Backup & Restore procedure

In Movies 2.1 we plan to add support for an integrated online backup and restore procedure.

When you add a new movie to your collection, you can add it by (i) typing a title and selecting the title which matches your movie, (ii) scanning a barcode or (iii) by editing all fields manually. When (i) or (ii) are applied, a data source is contacted in order to fetch as many movie details as possible (cover, runtime, actors, ...).

We try to provide as many datasources as possible, but if you want your specific datasource to be added, feel free to contact us to investigate about the possibilities - or provide us with a PHP script which fetches movie details given a title.

When a weblink is tapped within the movie details (i.e. you tap on the URL field), that link is launched. The link is either launched within a webpage in Movies (in case "Links in Safari" is off) or is given to Mobile Safari (which causes Movies to exit, but gives you a greater browsing experience).

As the name implies, these values are used whenever you add a new movie to your collection and when that information cannot be retrieved from the data source.

When your movie list is ordered by title, you might want to have "A Nightmare on Elm Street" be listed just before "Nightwatch" - i.e. you want the starting "A" to be ignored when sorting by title.

The "Ignore Words" section is a list of words (by default: A, An and The) which are ignored when sorting by Title.

Movies has 2 major view modes: Shelf and List.

  • Shelf mode lists your movies as if they reside on a physical shelf
  • List mode lists your movies in a classical iPhone list. Within list mode, not only the movie title is shown, but you can select the subtitle you want to be displayed (Year, Runtime, Location, Genre, Media, Director, ...)

Choosing a different sorting option results in the movie list being ordered in a different way.

When Title is the sorting method, Movies not only lists your collection in alphabetical order, it also shows a quick-list on the right-hand-side which allows to browse even faster through your library.

The other sorting methods are straightforward.

It allows to choose a different theme for the Movie app. Currently, Movies offers 5 themes: Charcoal, Metal, Wood, Classical White and Classical Black.

If enabled, it shows the movie title below the movie cover.
